This past weekend, the 17th
and 18th of February, 2017, the UIL Texas State Championships were
held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center in Austin TX. The road to State is arduous; in order to
qualify for the State meet swimmers must first qualify for the Regional
Championships by placing top 6 in their designated District. For the next step, the aforementioned athletes
must then compete at the regional level. The qualifiers for the State
Championship are then determined as follows: the top two finishers in each regional
event, plus the remaining top 8 swimmers in the State. The qualified swimmers
are then eligible to compete at the State Championship. The following
highlights the performances of our Dad’s Club Swim Team athletes at this prestigious
event. Qualifiers Emma Stephenson (Stratford), Morgen Reyna
(Stratford), Olivia Lyster (Stratford), Brittany Baerg
(Stratford), Payton Moak (Stratford), Clayton Bobo
(Stratford), Ellie Vincent
(Memorial), Caleb Duncan (Klein), Chris Hung (Cinco Ranch), Kaley
Hoffman (Westside). Finalists Brittany
Baerg, Peyton Moak, Christopher Hung and Morgen Reyna all
participated in the 200 medley finals. Moak (fly) joined his Stratford
teammates to win the B final with a season best of 1:34.50. Baerg (breast),
Reyna (free) and Stephenson (fly) finished 5th in the B final and
Christopher Hung (breast) earned a bronze medal with his team mates on Cinco
Ranch.
| Emma Stephenson made the
championship final in both of her individual events. Her preliminary time of
23.18 in the 50 free is a new Dad’s Club 15-16 team record. Overall, Stephenson
finished 5th in the 50 free and 7th in the 100 fly. Kaley Hoffman also earned herself a trip to finals in both of her individual events. Hoffman placed 3rd in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 back, both in B finals. This was the second year in a row Hoffman qualified for state in the 200 IM and 100 back. Clayton Bobo swept the sprint freestyles and became the only male swimmer of the meet to take titles in two individual events. Bobo’s winning time of 19.95 in the 50 free made him only the 3rd Texas boy in UIL State history to break the 20.00 barrier. His second win came in the 100 free with a personal best of 43.56.
