13 of our national group swimmers participated at this year’s Winter Jr. Nationals held in College Station on Dec. 7th -10th.

Brittany Baerg, Jeremy Bates, Clayton Bobo, Sydney Buchman, Caleb Duncan, Kaley Hoffman, Will Kallmeyer, Ellie McLeod, Sophie Newell, Audrey Orange, Emma Stephenson, Ellie Vincent, and Cooper Wozencraft.

The meet was attended by nearly 250 teams and proved to be one of the most competitive Winter Jr. Nationals in history. Overall our boys placed 12th in the combined team scores and easily made us the highest ranking Gulf team on the boys’ side.

We had many great swims which included new personal bests, individual and relay finalist, team records and gulf records.

Here are some of our swimmer’s noteworthy performances.

Cooper Wozencraft and Emma Stephenson started us off with best times in the 50 free. Wozencraft became only our 6th boy ever under 21 seconds with a time of 20.95. Stephenson became our 3rd fastest girl in history with a time of 23.41, her time was also a new 15-16 team record.

Wozencraft also went on to make the B final in the 100 backstroke. His time of 49.39 placed him 4th in the B final.

Clayton Bobo earned himself a second swim in the Championship final of the 50 free.  With Scottsdale’s Ryan Hoffer also taking part in the final this was easily one of the most awaited races in the US for the 2016/17 SC season. Hoffer turned in one of the fastest times ever in our sport, but it was Bobo’s second place finish that made Dad’s Club history. Bobo’s time of 19.90 made him the 1st Dad’s Club swimmer to break the 20.00 barrier.

Bobo also went on to make finals in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly and reached the podium in both sprint free events with a silver in the 50 and bronze in the 100.

Our swimmers also put together many strong relays. This was the first time in recent Dad’s Club history to qualify every single relay event in both the girls and boys division in a national level meet. This adds up to a total of 10 relays.

In the 200 medley relay Wozencraft, Bates, Bobo and Duncan put together a very strong performance which broke our first relay team record of the meet with a time of 1:32.06.  The same four boys returned in the 400 medley relay and earned their second Dad’s Club relay record of the meet with a time of 3:23.32. Both of those relays broke some of the most impressive team records on our books. The previous records were set back in the 1980’s by some of our most success swimmers in Dad’s Club history.

Our girls also turned in some impressive relay swims of their own, most notably in the 400 free relay.

Audrey Orange, Emma Stephenson, Sophie Newell, and Kaley Hoffman put together the most solid Dad’s Club relay of the meet. This might have not been our highest placing relay, but it is not often when every single relay member brings their very best. Each of these ladies split very solid times in each of their 100 free legs - Orange 51.3, Stephenson 51.7, Newell 52.7 and Hoffman 52.2.  Overall our ladies went from being ranked 49th to a 29th place finish.

We continued our tradition of recognizing the best performance of each session.  There are many factors in choosing the best swim of the session which include: time dropped, placing, splitting, execution of the race, overcoming obstacles, etc.

Wednesday FinalsClayton Bobo’s 50 fly split of 21.07 in the 200 medley relay. Bobo’s split was the fastest of the entire meet.

Thursday PrelimsCooper Wozencraft was battling an illness throughout the meet and still manage to break the 21 second barrier in the 50 free. His time of 20.95 moved him up a whopping 49 places.

Thursday FinalsClayton Bobo’s 50 free. Bobo became the first Dad’s Club swimmer under 20.00

Friday PrelimsEmma Stephenson 100 back. Stephenson dropped a full second and moved up 39 spots in the rankings.

Friday FinalsEmma Stephenson’s 50 free split in the 200 free relay. Stephenson split under 23.00 with a time of 22.93.

Saturday Prelims – Clayton Bobo’s 100 free. Bobo tied the open team record with a time of 43.81.
