The 2014 UIL State Championships where held on February 21st-22nd at the Lee and Joe Jamail University of Texas Swim Center. Many of our swimmers represented their schools in both the 4A and 5A Championships.

4A

Sam Cordova, Brandon Hay, Courtney Jackson, Maddie Robinson, and Erika Stephenson represented the Stratford Spartans.

The Stratford ladies had their best finish since joining the 4A division in 2010. Their efforts earned them a 3rd place in the team standings.

Sophomore Erika Stephenson led the Spartans by placing 2nd and 3rd in the 200 Free and 100 Free of the B Final. Junior Maddie Robinson managed to sneak into the A Final of the 100 Back where she finished 7th with a time of 59.36.

In the relays, Courtney Jackson combined forces with teammates Stephenson and Robinson to put together some exciting races. In the last relay of the meet (400 Free) the Stratford ladies trailed Magnolia throughout most of the race until Jackson closed in and passed their competitors on the last 25. Their 3rd place finish in the event secured the Spartans 3rd place in the overall team standing. Magnolia settled for the 4th overall standing trailing Stratford by only 3 points.

Seniors Sam Cordova and Brandon Hay both participated in individual races. Cordova competed in the 50 Free B Final, where he finished in 4th place with a time of 21.99. Hay also competed in a B Final, where he finished 3rd in the 100 Fly with a lifetime best of 52.50.

5A

Six Dad’s Club swimmers represented Memorial High School at 5A State.

The Lady Mustangs competed in two relays. Alice Read, Briana Burns, Alexandra Buscher, and teammate Nikki Denkler joined forces in the 200 Medley Relay. Their time of 1:49.11 placed them 7th overall. In the 200 Free Relay, Ellie Tuchaai joined Buscher, Burns, and Denkler to place 10th with a time of 1:38.71.

The first individual Gold Medal to be awarded went to Alexandra Buscher who defended her 2013 State Title in the 200 Free. Her winning time of 1:47.78 also bettered her Memorial record by 0.21. Buscher also participated in the 100 Free where she managed to out-touch three other competitors for the Silver. Only 0.20 separated 2nd -5th place.

Senior Briana Burns ended her high school swimming career on a very good note. Her time of 1:04.95 in the 100 Breast was good enough to earn her a Bronze Medal. This was Burns’ first individual state medal. Burns qualified for State in the 100 Breast in all four years. She also managed to better her standing each year. Freshman 14th, Sophomore 12th, Junior 8th and Senior year 3rd.

Cooper Wozencraft was the lone State Qualifier from the Memorial boys and one of only two freshman to advance to the A Final of an individual event. Wozencraft finished 5th in the 100 Fly and 2nd in the 100 Back. His prelims time of 50.18 in the Fly is a new personal best. Overall Wozencraft single-handedly scored 31 points, which placed the Mustangs 28th out of the 64 participating teams.
